Wednesday 16th February 2011

NATURALISTS OF MILL HILL: THE VALUE OF A LOCAL INTEREST

Suitable: All

Meet: 7:30 for 8 pm, Wilberforce Centre, St Paul’s Church, The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, NW7 1QU.

Tube Mill Hill East then bus 240 to Mill Hill School.

Talk: Dr Michael Worms will present a talk on the renowned naturalists of Mill Hill and the importance of a local interest in wildlife. Expected to last around an hour.

CONSERVATION WORKDAY, MILL HILL OLD RAILWAY Nature Reserve

Suitable: All

Meet: 10:30 am, MHOR Nature Reserve, Dean’s Lane entrance, Burnt Oak

Tube Burnt Oak + buses 305 (Dean's Lane entrance); 204 (Deansbrook Road).

Workday: pre-season bramble cutting, litter clearing, maintenance. Tools and training provided. Time 10:30 am to 12:30. Note: this closed nature reserve is open every Sunday.

DARWIN CENTRE, NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM

Suitable: All

Meet: 10:00am, Totteridge & Whetstone tube station (car park £1; tube fare to South Ken) or South Ken tube, Exhibition Rd exit, c. 10:40am.

Visit to new Darwin Centre at Natural History Museum, South Kensington. Entrance free but those without tube passes will need to pay tube fare. Probable time a couple of hours plus return journey.

LONDON WETLAND CENTRE, BARNES

Suitable: All

Meet: 9:30 am Totteridge & Whetstone tube station, to decide whether tube/bus or car journey. Car park £1 + tube fare for non-pass holders if by public transport.

Entrance fee for non-members of WWT £9.05 (concession £6.73).

Visit to Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust wetland reserve at Barnes, south London, particularly for ducks, geese, swans, wading birds and water wildlife. About 2-3 hours.

MARSH AND WOODLAND WILDLIFE, COPPETTS WOOD/GLEBELANDS

Suitable: All

Meet: 8:00 am Coppetts Wood Nature Reserve, near toolshed. Summers Lane entrance. Car parking free at Summers Lane recycling centre. Buses: routes 43, 134, 234 to Hillside Avenue or 382 to Summers Lane Recycling centre.

Experienced birder Tony Clancy will lead a walk of Coppetts Wood and Glebelands focusing on birdsong and the wetland wildlife (may include tadpoles and Great Crested Newts).

DAWN CHORUS WALK, DARLANDS LAKE

Meet: 4:30 am Orange Tree Pub car park, Totteridge Lane.

Tube Totteridge & Whetstone + 251 bus (bus unlikely to run that early but OK for return at around 6-7 am)

Walk to Darlands Lake Nature Reserve, Totteridge Valley, to hear song from first awaking birds build up to full spring "dawn chorus". One of the earliest dawn chorus events of the year, led by experienced guide to identify birdsong.

Meet: 10:45 for 11 am at Hendon Wood Lane entrance to the Totteridge Fields. Parking in adjacent Old Cholmelians Sports Club. Tube Totteridge & Whetstone + 251 bus.

Guided walk of the nature reserve including spring butterflies and meadow flowers.

MOTH AND BAT EVENING, TOTTERIDGE FIELDS

Herts & Middx Butterfly Conservation’s Moth Group expert Andrew Wood will conduct a moth survey in the Totteridge Fields nature reserve and identify moths attracted to light screens. A bat survey, using bat detectors, will also be conducted. To finish 11:30-12 pm.

BUTTERFLY WALK, TOTTERIDGE FIELDS NATURE RESERVE

Suitable: All

Meet: 10:45 for 11 am at Hendon Wood Lane entrance to the Totteridge Fields. Parking in adjacent Old Cholmelians Sports Club. Tube Totteridge & Whetstone + 251 bus.

Guided walk of the nature reserve including summer butterflies, day-flying moths including Narrow-bordered 5-spot Burnet (and possibly Mother Shipton and Chimney Sweeper), birds and meadow flowers.
